Instructions for Friday 9/22/2017:
1. Take the first 20 minutes of class to explore the articles on CTE. Please notice that I have added one additional article dealing with former NFL (and Patriots) Star Aaron Hernandez. After being sentenced to a life-sentence for murder, he committed suicide and was found to have severe CTE at the age of 23.
2. Work with a partner as you take notes on neurotransmission on page B6. You should watch the videos, explore the powerpoint, and read the articles about Depression.
4. Take notes on the google doc that has been shared with you about depression.

SWR Date:A-Day: 10/18; B-Day: 10/19
You will be asked to write on one of the following three prompts. You should be prepared to write on any of them. You will have 30 minutes to complete your SWR in class. You will not be able to use your note packets. For assistance on writing a SWR, visit the IB Writing Page on this website. You may share any outlines or practice with your teacher for feedback before the SWR. This will count towards you "understand" section of your Learner's Portfolio.
1. Using one example, Explain the effects of neurotransmission on human behavior.
2. Explain the function of one hormone in human behavior.
3. Describe one study that demonstrates the effect that the environment can have on one physiological process.

Biological LoA Wrap Up: The Biology of a Violent Criminal
Background Questions
-What is the MAOA Gene and how does it impact biology? Behavior?
-To what extent does the MAOA Gene impact the likelihood of a person becoming a violent criminal?
Discussion Questions
1. Should Biology play a role in the courtroom? Why or why not?
2. Would you want to know if you had this gene? Why or why not?
3. Should violent psychopaths be punished less severely if their behavior can be blamed on brain differences or genes? Or, conversely, should their sentence be longer precisely because their biology makes them even more intractable and dangerous than other criminals?
4. How does this topic relate to the major debates in psychology? (Nature & Nurture, Freewill & Determinism, Holism & Reductionism)
5. Have your stances on the major debates changed during this unit? If so, how? If not, why not?

Pack the Packet
Instructions: Today you will be using the resources below, the studies you have already learned about, and your ability to apply knowledge to new situations to fill in your entire green packet. This activity is called "Pack the Packet."
For each learning outcome that has not been completed, use your knowledge and other notes to help you fill in each page. For example, on B4: Ethics, list studies from the Biological LoA that have ethical concerns and explain their ethics. Your packet should be complete following today. We will go over each page next class.
B3: Discuss how and why particular research methods are used at the biological level of analysis.
Use the powerpoint and attachment as a guide to complete page B3. You should identify what studies we have examined that relate to each of these types of research. We have examined multiple studies for each research method.

B1 & B2 (Principles of the Biological LoA): Identify multiple studies that relate to each Principle from the Biological LoA. (For example: Martinez & Kesner (1991) is an example of Principle #2: Animal Research.) Be able to explain why they relate.
B4: (Ethics at the Biological LoA): Identify three studies that have ethical concerns and explain why each one is ethical and potentially unethical. Be sure to use your blue packet to help you remember the ethical standards. You should identify ways in which the study was both ethical and unethical.
B9: (Physiology & Cognition/Memory): A form of cognition is memory. What studies show how our memories can be impacted by biological functions? Examine all the studies we have looked at and record notes for the studies that show how our biology impacts our memories. (For Example: HM and the hippocampus).
B10: Brain Imaging Technologies: Use the following links to help you gain more understanding about both MRIs and fMRIs. These links will also demonstrate the strengths and limitations of each type of brain imaging technology. Be sure to
identify studies that we have examined that use each type of technology and explain how the strengths and limitations of the technology apply.
